Man dies by suicide in Regent Park fearing NRC; note says “no one responsible” but mentions deportation fear

A tragic incident unfolded in Kolkata’s Regent Park area on Saturday when the body of Dilip Kumar Saha was found hanging inside his house. The 42-year-old man’s death has caused shock and concern in the locality.

Police recovered a suicide note from the scene in which Dilip clearly mentioned that no one should be held responsible for his death. However, he also expressed deep fear about being sent to Bangladesh. It is believed he was suffering from intense psychological stress related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Dilip had migrated from Bangladesh to India as a child and had been living here ever since. Locals said he had never faced any issues until recent discussions around citizenship verification began resurfacing.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are probing all angles. The body has been sent for postmortem. The incident once again highlights the atmosphere of fear and confusion surrounding NRC in vulnerable communities.
